This large Bolga fruit basket is one of our many quality fair trade African baskets. It is ideal for storing and displaying fresh fruit or baked goods, or for corralling your remotes in. This basket is about 14" in diameter by 3 1/2" deep. The price shown is for a single basket, and only one is available.
Like all our Bolga baskets, this product is handmade in the Bolgatanga region of northern Ghana and purchased using fair trade practices. Bolga baskets are among the best known African baskets because of their versatility and durability. They are woven from local Kinkanhe grass by both men and women, most of whom are farmers as well as weavers. The dyes are produced from local minerals and vegetation. The basket export industry is a critical source of income for the weavers, especially when harvests are poor.
If your Bolga basket ever needs cleaning or reshaping, just gently wet it down, reshape as needed, and allow to dry. The colors won't bleed into each other and the weave will actually get tighter and more durable. You should wet the basket about once a year to hydrate the straw and keep it supple.
About the brand: African Market Baskets is a small business located in Boulder, Colorado that works closely with weavers to ensure fair conditions and wages, as well as high quality products. It is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and Green America, and donates 10% of its profits to Every Basket Helps, a non-profit working to alleviate poverty in northern Ghana.
