This fair trade African basket is perfect if you're looking for a sturdy tote in a neutral color. Our large natural oval Bolga basket has two brown leather handles and is undyed, leaving it the natural color of the straw it is woven from. It is approximately 9" wide by 17" long by 10" deep. Part of our Bolga Basket Collection, it makes a durable and striking tote, and serves well as a picnic basket or magazine basket. Because each basket is handwoven and there are subtle variations in the color of the straw, the basket you receive may vary slightly from the image shown here. To clean or re-shape a Bolga basket, simply wet it with cool water, clean and shape it as needed (use mild soap only), and allow it to air dry. You should wet the basket about once a year to hydrate the straw and keep it supple.
The price shown is for a single basket.
Our beautiful Bolga baskets are made in the Bolgatanga region of Ghana in West Africa, and are fair trade products. Bolga baskets are among the best known African baskets because of their versatility and durability. They are woven from local elephant grass, and the handles are wrapped in goat hide. The basket export industry is a critical source of income for the weavers, especially when harvests are poor. Bolga baskets are also sustainable products, and their production has a minimal impact on the environment.
About the brand: African Market Baskets is a small business located in Boulder, Colorado that works closely with weavers to ensure fair conditions and wages, as well as high quality products.
