This beautiful fair trade Mistari basket is handwoven from natural fibers and strips of authentic kitenge cloth, a traditional East African textile made from brightly patterned cotton. It is about 12 1/4" in diameter and 4" deep. The cloth is red, black, and tan, forming a vivid pattern against the natural straw fiber. It is produced by WomenCraft, a cooperative of artisans in rural Tanzania.
About the producers: WomenCraft is a non-profit organization that operates in Ngara, Tanzania, producing baskets, trivets, and other décor items from natural fibers and fabrics indigenous to East Africa. It began as a small pilot project of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2004, and is now a thriving enterprise that employs over 300 women and exports products around the world. It is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization.
